The Algarve is a place people go to relax and spend a week in the sun. In my research for our trip I didn’t find many ‘tourist’ hotspots per se, which at first was disappointing for me as my typical holiday involves us seeing as much as we can. On the upside it did mean I got a week to lay about by a pool and do next to nothing!
If you are looking for things to do in the Algarve then read on as this post is for you.
1. Praia da Marinha
Lets start with my favourite place. Praia da Marinha is known as one of the most beautiful beaches of the world. Nestled in a small cove lies a beautiful strip of golden sand contrasting with glittering turquoise waters.
Before you head down to the beach take the short walking trail along the cliff tops and take in the amazing views. There are many sea stacks and an impressive M shaped rock formation.
The steps down to the beach are quite long and get steeper towards the end but worth the effort. Head down the strip of beach away from the restaurant and you will find quieter spots to chill out for the day.
2. Albufeira Old Town
The Old Town is the historic centre of Albufeira. It consists of traditional Portuguese streets and plazas, filled with an abundance of restaurants and shops.
Spend a couple of hours having a wander and browsing the shops. Once you have had your fill you can head straight to the beach as it opens out on the Praia dos Pescadores, a calm and sheltered beach.
3. The Chapel of Bones
Maybe not for everyone but an interesting short visit. This particular chapel of bones is located in the Alcantarilha village, on the southern side of a 16th century church and is in the same style as other bone chapels in Portugal. The interior is practically all covered and ornamented with more than 1500 human skeletons.
4. Albufeira Marina
The reason we popped down here was because of the pastel coloured buildings (because pretty photos 🙂 ). We were surprised to find a lovely marina with restaurants, bars and sea excursions. Trips need to be booked in advance, check them out here.
5. Praia dos Arrifes
This quiet little rocky beach area was just down the road from our villa. A quick 2 minute walk brought us to interesting rock formations right off the beach and beautiful turquoise water. You could spend a peaceful day here soaking up the sun and grab lunch or dinner at the restaurant Sardinha right on the beach.
6. Designer Outlet Algarve
If you fancy a shopping day you can head over to the new Designer Outlet Algarve, only opened in winter 2017. Home to over 50 brands in a gorgeous Portuguese style shopping village, there is something for everyone. I particularly enjoyed the pink umbrella installation and the pretty tiled walls 🙂
A final bonus point…
7. Relax by the pool
If you just cannot be bothered to venture out of your villa or hotel then you can always chill out by the pool in the glorious Portugal sunshine!
